So in my search for my perfect wallet, in the previous post, I found<a href="http://www.larkandlola.com/2013/06/sew-cash-envelope-wallet.html" target="_blank"> this tutorial </a>for exactly what I needed to make!<br />
I couldn't find the fabric I liked in laminated cotton so I bought the iron on vinyl and it worked out fine, although it seemed I spent more time ironing than any other step, but it was worth it to have a wipe-able surface. I used different color zippers to color code the envelopes i.e. pink is for clothing/accessories and green is for grocery shopping...... I hope she likes it as much as I do!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/123643702/pdf-wallet-pattern-zipper-scrap-wallet" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgY7GYjXO0t51tICCanVbB18Ny0D0WEJDwVy-1peE64PWO5OzcYViMX_fppt7Xsl5KCV50cyYNKXiNtPuZP67YUiGi2pEUK3QXFtctGE_mayCaQxvBSxvWTZQYUo4pox2T8SZXhG4NQy5o/s1600/il_570xN.428001392_fihi.jpg" height="290" width="320" /></a></div>
No I didn't have to buy a pattern but I just wanted all the thinking to be already done for me this time. The pattern designer had a great idea of buying home dec fabric swatches to make the wallet, this way you get a group of coordinating fabrics and just the right amount, plus I've seen them at joanns for .99<br />
So here is my first days work:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfNI9xwDmdlVbeH_S4sbVZkyG5d5BwkKKwkrQawjziSgbJR-N-aBmY7BO6nSurQcK3pvcf-NwZlhBnNiZFcoP2BXmlO0BGLgoUZdpao1qBXnIfOIdHqXayuRt2CMX7qfX3kEOeCia5pkk/s1600/WIN_20140324_162259.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfNI9xwDmdlVbeH_S4sbVZkyG5d5BwkKKwkrQawjziSgbJR-N-aBmY7BO6nSurQcK3pvcf-NwZlhBnNiZFcoP2BXmlO0BGLgoUZdpao1qBXnIfOIdHqXayuRt2CMX7qfX3kEOeCia5pkk/s1600/WIN_20140324_162259.JPG" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I am loving how its turning out! Now I am waiting on my zippers and lobster clasp to come in the mail so I can finish. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Supply buying tip:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I like to buy my hardware on esty. There is a great selection and they have items that are hard to find in the fabric store also at better prices. I bought 5 zippers with a cute pull for $5. and a set of clasps for $3. I know that would have been per item in the store.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I will post my new wallet hopefully by the end of the week!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
UPDATE: Well I would have been done sooner but when I finished and went to put my cards in I discovered that I didnt sew the bottoms of the pockets in the first step and had to take the whole thing apart!!!!! ewwww! I just got around to finishing it and I had a bit of trouble with the zipper and the binding, which is rare for me because those are two things I love to do. I am really picky when it comes to detail stitching and small details that this pattern did not walk you through so for my pickyness I am not 100% in love with the end result, but it is still pretty and functional.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I LOVE my Jadeite......and any excuse to use it! When I was asked to set a table at a Valentines banquet I knew I needed to figure out a way to pull in the lovely vintage color. So off to my<a href="http://strawberry-patches.com/" target="_blank"> favorite fabric store </a>to find some vintage looking fabric that had mint and red as the primary colors, I was hoping for a variety of 4 fabrics so I could make 2 of each. Well... they didn't let me down, I found this great set of fabrics. <a href="http://strawberry-patches.com/cgi-bin/Store/store.cgi" target="_blank">SCRUMTIOUS</a> by Moda fabrics. grabbed some red rick-rack and red Kona cotton. Let me take a moment to brag about quality fabrics. I come across people everyday that choke when they ask me about what fabrics I like and how much they are per yard....but no matter what others may think quality fabric is an absolute must! ONLY IF you want your projects to turn out professional looking, if you want to enjoy your sewing process, if you want a product that will last the test of time.... I could go on!<br />
I have wasted too many hours and projects on cheap fabric. I also only use cloth napkins and have purchased as well as made them and there is nothing worse than a bad napkin. I have already washed this set 3 times and they have come out beautiful with minimal ironing...which is appreciated, and while we are talking about cloth napkins I thought I would share my latest napkin organizing find.....over the door shoe organizer is perfect for storing your cloth napkins, you can see what you have, access them easily without digging through a pile and they are out of the way to free up space for other dining accessories. I spent around $40 on supplies and if you compare to customized napkins at a boutique they usually run $24+ for a set of 2. So I think I did pretty good for a set of 8 costing $8. each.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhauIAdnRWg4gQU68g4TbP7k8SZeFI_hIlPKefhmRB-j72xQD2fVf1pfWaJN84BsqOj-vtZ65qJNU3l_v1o3JY6meAYNv-PAptRX0KzraTzqRtjFrKLKSmBqTB9rtir-dpFVrZdARDZcMY/s1600/8624fe7299a111e3a4210ac3264adb15_5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhauIAdnRWg4gQU68g4TbP7k8SZeFI_hIlPKefhmRB-j72xQD2fVf1pfWaJN84BsqOj-vtZ65qJNU3l_v1o3JY6meAYNv-PAptRX0KzraTzqRtjFrKLKSmBqTB9rtir-dpFVrZdARDZcMY/s1600/8624fe7299a111e3a4210ac3264adb15_5.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
So here's what you need for 8 double-sided napkins:<br />
You need 1/2 yard print for 2 napkins or 2 yards for 8<br />
2 yards solid fabric<br />
14 yards rickrack...yes 14 :)<br />

now we are ready to add the rick-rack<br />
I like to add it to my front piece first - line up the zig zag with the edge of the right side, stitch on and then stitch the backing fabric right sides together. Run both ends of the rick-rack off the edge so the ends get caught in the seam when finished.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Ok BMQG Ladies this is for you, I will be demonstrating this at the November meeting, I will be referring you back to my blog for picture details if you are a visual learner. I have now made 4 of these quilt totes starting with t<a href="http://shellyssewingshrapnel.blogspot.com/2011/07/picnic-blanket-in-bag.html" target="_blank">his lovely quilt </a>commissioned by an etsian, those 2 quilts blogged both have gussets, this sounds complicated but it just a matter of adding 2-4" strip of fabric to your zipper before you apply it to the quilt. This is necessary if your quilt is fluffy or large, which both of those were. The plus quilts I am demonstrating are only 67" square and fairly thin so they fit with just the zipper. Speaking of zippers.........you must use a zipper that is heavy duty and sturdy for it will be getting some wear and tug, you want to shop for one that is also wide because the wider the zipper edge the more space for your folded up quilt and a much easier zip when folding up. The purchasing of the zipper will be your most challenging part of this project! If you are lucky enough to happen upon a "sleeping bag " zipper at the fabric store grab it, they are 100" long, which is too big but the are wide and sturdy, otherwise you need to head over to the upholstery section and buy a zipper by the yard or an upholstery cushion zip. You will probably need somewhere around 48" It is a good idea to finish your quilt and fold it and measure before you buy your zipper...unless you strike gold with the sleeping bag one. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<ol>
<li style="text-align: left;"><b>Your quilt:</b> If making a new quilt you may bind three sides if you wish and leave the binding free for the side with the zipper or wait until the last step to bind. If you are using an existing quilt, on one side pull out the stitching and free the binding from the quilt as below<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjw6mJ1w9HG5miIXsrxRE-EGM7kvro9I0LUoET9egW9sX-OQVqWvPJ9y98dsdUdxf68lVsBH17zHLz0eF7U5p_5JUd88onVdvopRey5pJz85FSZT5ZtyMGIg4S5KTRfyRMp2bVRVWF9TF0/s1600/IMG_2035.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjw6mJ1w9HG5miIXsrxRE-EGM7kvro9I0LUoET9egW9sX-OQVqWvPJ9y98dsdUdxf68lVsBH17zHLz0eF7U5p_5JUd88onVdvopRey5pJz85FSZT5ZtyMGIg4S5KTRfyRMp2bVRVWF9TF0/s320/IMG_2035.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>

</ol>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
2. <b>How to measure for the zipper: </b>Lay quilt out and depending on size you will fold in half or thirds (A.) Then bring the ends to the middle (B.) At this point you will measure from your fold in the middle around the outside edge, down the fold and back to the middle edge. That is the length of your zip, when you open up the zipper to apply it will then go around all 4 sides. Another way to think about measuring the zip is to measure the circumference of the folded quilt and divide by 2.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
(A.)<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdrvfpcyel8uUBwSIreoc41iJCerZgEbBwgHuGdy9NU8ZpK6YrT_EIX9gQ5H-8uFTOTrRzylOiAeZZTTuCbF7Lvv2RBHphVmHVKWhqFDgJE9OEcNBKgM9gxy-GsAh5UVj14P_E9XFgwEg/s1600/IMG_2026.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdrvfpcyel8uUBwSIreoc41iJCerZgEbBwgHuGdy9NU8ZpK6YrT_EIX9gQ5H-8uFTOTrRzylOiAeZZTTuCbF7Lvv2RBHphVmHVKWhqFDgJE9OEcNBKgM9gxy-GsAh5UVj14P_E9XFgwEg/s320/IMG_2026.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
(B.)<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijpfy6fBSE3fu0wrOHcvbAi61FODE7gaNyxN1QQpsaPxe6EIsCPpk0iNVcQnBvJQJv_QBVz7LXQmPco58eBMrxSGqWQlQhHixG6GBJQGRPVvh5PKOZufnTlWPA2_aPXTvzy1dFowo6GGQ/s1600/IMG_2027.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijpfy6fBSE3fu0wrOHcvbAi61FODE7gaNyxN1QQpsaPxe6EIsCPpk0iNVcQnBvJQJv_QBVz7LXQmPco58eBMrxSGqWQlQhHixG6GBJQGRPVvh5PKOZufnTlWPA2_aPXTvzy1dFowo6GGQ/s320/IMG_2027.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>3. Prepare straps:</b> Flip the folded quilt over and you will have your working surface for applying the handle(s) and zip. You will have to determine the length of your own strap to your preferences and if you would like 1 or 2, or if you want to get fancy with an adjustable strap (if you cut them off of duffel bags before you toss them like I do then you can cheat a bit) or embellish any ribbing, <a href="http://shellyssewingshrapnel.blogspot.com/search/label/sew%20a%20duffle%20bag" target="_blank">jute webbing</a>, nylon strapping, make your own with fabric and a stabilizer....get creative.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
If using one strap, take measurements of the top of the tote (along the binding) find the middle and then center for one side and evenly space the straps, do the same for the second strap. Stitch them on by going over stitching multiple times, making sure the ends don't fray you may zigzag too. You may then bind your quilt, keeping in mind you need an open place for zipper ends but I would rather rip out an inch of stitching later to keep the flow nice and smooth. Then refold the quilt to have (C) facing up to continue.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
(C.)<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwBzoUd-SuhXURfrrvRrs7L-kSwXH6h2Uv1-LgVf8puyItG8FUw8rSplmlsaryU6talO4QCVUukGtrXHbgplq6MDICja_YYzY8dHi7pFdWFl_6NW3vmnEIS7vzPSScEDY0n6U_xf3DR9g/s1600/IMG_2028.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwBzoUd-SuhXURfrrvRrs7L-kSwXH6h2Uv1-LgVf8puyItG8FUw8rSplmlsaryU6talO4QCVUukGtrXHbgplq6MDICja_YYzY8dHi7pFdWFl_6NW3vmnEIS7vzPSScEDY0n6U_xf3DR9g/s320/IMG_2028.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
(D.)<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZIKBsABUegz4-wXpFz-wV8f-TyDZKgIunxPE1iZOT7nO-Z9QrA1y9tTy3-a5UjjR85ZXOU3P4dhX3aiMB2OTY9M5DBFgUy6AslxbT8oQlNIWzMIldFRn5SA9YmD61Lkw_twmUgdXkINk/s1600/IMG_2029.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZIKBsABUegz4-wXpFz-wV8f-TyDZKgIunxPE1iZOT7nO-Z9QrA1y9tTy3-a5UjjR85ZXOU3P4dhX3aiMB2OTY9M5DBFgUy6AslxbT8oQlNIWzMIldFRn5SA9YmD61Lkw_twmUgdXkINk/s320/IMG_2029.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>4. Prepare Zipper:</b> Lay zipper out on folded quilt (D.) leaving a few inches hanging off the end, measure around 3 sides and add 2" for safety. Cut zipper at top (make sure the pull is below cut) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Cut a piece of fabric 2 1/2" X 2x the width of zipper plus seam allowance</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
i.e. my zipper is 1 1/4 wide so I will cut fabric 2.5 X 3"</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
you will then fold right sides over the end of your measured zipper (E.), stitch along the bottom edge encasing the zipper, be aware of the zip part and use the wheel to lower your needle one stitch at a time so you don't break a needle, then run a stitch as close to the zip side without catching the zipper. Pull stitched fabric right side out (F) trim if too long and fold raw edges in and top stitch (G)</div>

<b>5. Attaching Zipper:</b> (H) Open zipper up and lay right side down, this part is too tricky to explain so I will refer you to the pictures. (I) starting in the center of your folded quilt start pinning the zip with the teeth facing inward. (J) run the zip over your straps along the edge of the binding. Being careful at the corners to round them out and pin well but do not lip corners,( it will seem tight for now but will be perfect later)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
(K) Pull the stitching now from your binding and insert the top ends of the zipper, I pin one side at a time and then make sure its all even then insert the tips into the binding (K) (L,M) is the pinned zip ready to stitch.</div>

Being able to use scraps and not have to fuss over size allowed me to play with colors and enjoy my block as it grew. As I was going through my old blog list I realized that I never posted a finished picture of my<a href="http://shellyssewingshrapnel.blogspot.com/2010/01/little-bits.html" target="_blank"> little bits quilt</a>. One of my first projects on this blog. Well its been a few years and the boys have changed a little but as you can see they still are excited about their quilts, even little boys like to have nice things and they feel special when its made by mommy...</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
It may not seem like much of a difference, but when you have twins you learn you have to color code things and so for quite a while we have stuck to it, but lately Mr. Red has been wearing and asking for blue and its confusing everyone, so now its just whatever color you like, its a new phase and the color coding has served its purpose.</div>

This next photo is of the backing and a label I made, it was really cute when I put the quilts on their bed for the first time, I showed them the label and their name and they hugged it and like to sleep holding that corner because it says love mom....how cute are these little guys?</div>

rainy day and a change of plans gave me the perfect unexpected opportunity to sew</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
love it when that happens....</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
so here's where I'm at, I was debating on 9 or 12 squares, but think I'll keep it at 9, perfect wall hanging, lap or floor throw for baby</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I went ahead and bordered in 2.5 white strips and like how that set off the blocks</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
now a trip to my <a href="http://strawberry-patches.com/" target="_blank">favorite fabric shop</a> for the backing and binding, they have had many fun and unusual juvenile prints lately, hope to find something tomorrow!</div>

After all that talk yesterday about scraps I thought maybe I should use some! So inspired by<a href="http://www.redpepperquilts.com/2011/11/now-back-to-some-regular-sewing.html" target="_blank"> red pepper quilts</a> bright log cabin scrap quilt I got started on my first log cabin quilt. Something that I personally am really attracted to is taking classic patterns and making them modern with new techniques and fabrics, since I'm a vintage modern girl ;)</div>

4 blocks completed and I don't have a finished plan for this quilt, I am just going through my color boxes and completing one block at a time, since it is obviously a juvenile quilt I am guessing it will stay small, lap or crib size, might even be a nice "I spy" floor quilt, adding sashing would expand it also so who knows?</div>

But...how do you define scraps?<br />
Well, I buy designer fabrics most of the time, so if there is a scrap 1" wide after I cut, it goes into the :small" scrap bin, if it i large enough to be used again it gets folded back in with the large piece of fabric. Why do you save such small scraps? I get asked frequently (especially by the shrapnel police) and I have even pulled out scraps I've found in the trash! I shout "hey, that's Amy Butler"and my kids giggle. Well if I paid $8-17/yd I want to get every bit used out of that yard. If I need to make a greeting card, or<a href="http://shellyssewingshrapnel.blogspot.com/2010/07/girly-party-gift.html" target="_blank"> little gift</a> and have the opportunity to use a 1"x1" scrap of some of my fav fabric from my fav designers then the whole project just became a designer piece, even if its background is drop cloth. I have <a href="http://shellyssewingshrapnel.blogspot.com/search/label/art%20wrap" target="_blank">many</a> <a href="http://shellyssewingshrapnel.blogspot.com/search/label/burpies" target="_blank">examples</a> of <a href="http://shellyssewingshrapnel.blogspot.com/search/label/family" target="_blank">this</a> in action<a href="http://shellyssewingshrapnel.blogspot.com/search/label/zippers" target="_blank"> here</a> on my blog. It's kind of like tossing the bacon grease for a chef, don't do it!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjztpq73qDnQtMs1krQChUZ-cEPmEKlyxZRSnEi1G5iBDHTg0FgpDuzWN0hJC7XZZv3qmMNQW3y0qGixB-ilkkk1bVwxPfYUKk9solTRH0M6ILlF7zpDENlXDwCNRBtNV3mCQA2qD25Ujk/s1600/bunting.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjztpq73qDnQtMs1krQChUZ-cEPmEKlyxZRSnEi1G5iBDHTg0FgpDuzWN0hJC7XZZv3qmMNQW3y0qGixB-ilkkk1bVwxPfYUKk9solTRH0M6ILlF7zpDENlXDwCNRBtNV3mCQA2qD25Ujk/s320/bunting.JPG" width="264" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This example pretty much sums up what I'm trying to say,<a href="http://katiewiebe.blogspot.com/" target="_blank"> my friend</a> made me this bunting...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
spot any designer prints? I can name three off hand.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
ok enough about the idea of scraps....what I am getting at is when I thought I would do this quilt with scraps, I had to define scraps. The BOM2 quilt has JUMBO blocks that measure 24.5" each so the blocks pieces are 4.5" wide and run from 4.5"-16.5" so my "scraps" need to be pretty big, but this does not mean I have to buy alot of fabric, just be using my "large" scraps for this one.....that all being said I did not have enough Kona solid to finish even one block...hahaha no problem I have not purchased my 5 yards needed of background fabric to complete this quilt, so now I have a reason to get out there and buy it!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here is where I had to stop, I was short the 4.5"x16.5" pieces to complete the block</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRNSbSwl4fmShvvw7_C20zKAbiswzG8-SBSiTpXQOdcCs266VfbR6K1jmiSl-jCcmJ0b1JlxpmJjWxoAc-qsVwFhwKN-GTh-8C-8Mt45IPfuERBcTdDthFc_8OEsWLKUX5Qf4Se2iBj8c/s1600/BOM2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="309" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRNSbSwl4fmShvvw7_C20zKAbiswzG8-SBSiTpXQOdcCs266VfbR6K1jmiSl-jCcmJ0b1JlxpmJjWxoAc-qsVwFhwKN-GTh-8C-8Mt45IPfuERBcTdDthFc_8OEsWLKUX5Qf4Se2iBj8c/s320/BOM2.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I followed the instructions she gave in great detail about starching, cutting, and "scant 1/4" a little extra prep work but I like the results. I plan on making each block in one colorway.</div>

I have been wanting to make a quilt entirely of my scraps, and since I buy new fabric for most projects, my scraps have added up. I store them in clear bins by color and knew that I had enough of each color to make a spectrum quilt. This quilt is a gift and I plan on turning it into one of my <a href="http://shellyssewingshrapnel.blogspot.com/2011/07/picnic-blanket-in-bag.html" target="_blank"> picnic blankets</a> in a bag.<br />
<a href="http://quiltstory.blogspot.com/2011/12/fabric-tuesday-party-time.html" target="_blank">Here</a> is one of my inspirations, as there were many on pinterest of course....I was considering using soilds like <a href="http://filminthefridge.com/2013/02/19/kates-quilt/" target="_blank">FITF</a> to break it up but after I finished cutting I had enough to do the whole quilt.<br />
Here is the top half, I had to lay it out in sections my table is not large enough for the whole thing......more to come soon im sure.<br />

I learned a few things along the way, but over all I love the finished product and it just fueled my desire to continue and quilt some more.....so we'll see whats up next, I am thinking something with the scraps I already have in the stash since the beautiful backing fabric from this quilt broke the fabric allowance for a bit, but well worth it!<br />
Since the almond trees are so pretty the quilt wanted its photo shoot outside so here it is.<br />

It has been time for finishing up projects.<br />
First the hankie quilt.... I needed to find a way to display my Grandmas hankies in a useful and beautiful way<i>.</i><b style="font-style: italic;"> </b>I used a white swiss dot for the sashing and boarders as well as the binding, my goal was to let the colors of the hankies be the main focus of this quilt, I also backed the quilt top with interfacing and decided to hand tie rather than machine quilt.<br />
Then I got to work on the <a href="http://shellyssewingshrapnel.blogspot.com/2012/09/scallop-quilt.html" target="_blank">scallop quilt</a>.<br />
The quilt pieces were set aside for other projects and when I went to pick them back up I found that I needed to re-iron them. The ironing technique using the foil goes quickly, but still time consuming. So the only other thing I have to say about the construction of this quilt is that the pieces are round so they are stretchy which can pull and become esque. So this quilt is less than perfect....but colorful and pretty non the less. I have the scallops, boarders and back ready to sandwich and quilt.<br />
I have a little quilt corner where I can display quilts and linens on an old ladder. I have hung my hankie quilt, and below that is a quilt my great-grandmother hand embroidered, all 50 states and the sate bird. Then she hand quilted this large King size quilt. Such beautiful craftsmanship.<br />

This is a very quick and easy project.<br />
I followed<a href="http://www.centsationalgirl.com/2012/04/diy-makeup-brush-holder/" target="_blank"> this tutorial</a> it came out perfect.<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It always seems like when I start packing for a trip I realize I need a<a href="http://shellyssewingshrapnel.blogspot.com/search/label/sew%20a%20duffle%20bag" target="_blank"> new bag</a>, a make up <a href="http://shellyssewingshrapnel.blogspot.com/2012/11/make-up-brush-roll.html" target="_blank">brush roll</a>, an </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
organizer for carrying accessories......</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjq0GuBmrxnwuYLB-gsM720pOt0FKtcNnUqutDKRFQn7RYDOl8OAdrNd4xWwHpqWcv8f95AO3q3rnaPz6elzIL4HOMUFbyizYvD9qs-Vsnt7GLmqBBZyZWgNXT_PEk4rU7XKYazn1ir1Tk/s1600/IMG_1405%5B1%5D.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjq0GuBmrxnwuYLB-gsM720pOt0FKtcNnUqutDKRFQn7RYDOl8OAdrNd4xWwHpqWcv8f95AO3q3rnaPz6elzIL4HOMUFbyizYvD9qs-Vsnt7GLmqBBZyZWgNXT_PEk4rU7XKYazn1ir1Tk/s320/IMG_1405%5B1%5D.JPG" width="319" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
so while I should be cleaning the house or prepping something for the trip I start to sew, it never fails!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is just how I work!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So searching for a tutorial that looks efficient and fast that I don't have to think or and customize very much, <a href="http://sewcraftyjess.blogspot.com/2012/08/travel-jewelry-clutch-tutorial.html#" target="_blank">this is what I found</a>. I wanted to use a shiny satin on the inside and my fabric was only 11" wide and I only had 9" zippers so I did make my clutch a bit narrower than the tute but its not crucial.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I keep fusible fleece on hand (buy at Joanns when interfacing are 50% off and stock up) I also keep a yard or so of vinyl for such projects and buy zippers in bulk from <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/zipit" target="_blank">this shop on etsy</a> because I always need a zipper.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
OK So my photos are not great with the reflection of the vinyl but you get the jist...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
so, make one for a Christmas gift this year!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

So I started collecting fabric in every shade of green. The pattern calls for 80 different fabrics, thus the scraps as suggested in her title. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

then she suggests following a method from one of our favorite bloggers <a href="http://annamariahorner.blogspot.com/2007/02/super-circles.html" target="_blank">AMH about curved piecing</a> and it really is a time and finger saver.</div>

here are my pieces cut and ironed, I was a little bit worried about some of the pressed edges came out, but when I started pinning them it worked out...phew..... didn't want to iron again!</div>

then you top stitch them together...this is the most interesting technique about this quilt </div>

what do you give dads.....they give us so much! there is no gift to repay what they have done for us so i like to stick to functional practical gifts for the daddy's<div>
this year it is a car kit filled with all the goodies that dad might forget...but will be glad when he finds them in his car kit! this project was easy and fast...also a great project if your are wanting to work with zippers but intimidated, because there is no turning or top stitching you just lay them flat and sew them on!</div>

i used this tutorial from<a href="http://www.notmartha.org/archives/2010/06/15/fathers-day-project-for-holidash/"> not martha</a>....a place i like to visit from time to time (i want to totally steal her name because that's how i feel sometimes)</div>

so, i followed her tute and it came out great!i thought the appliques were cute but not for our fathers, i didn't want to make a trip to the fabric store so i rummaged through my stash and came up with this list of items for my supplies:</div>
<div>
<ul>
<li>drop cloth canvas-for outer</li>
<li>old dress shirts-for binding (just the back panel of the shirt made about 4 yds bias tape, way more than needed)</li>
<li>old laundry bag-for pocket mesh</li>
<li>zippers from old laundry bags </li>
</ul>
<div>
the only thing i might have done differently is to add interfacing and another layer of drop cloth just for stability, but i don't think its that crucial </div>
</div>
<div>
i hope they like em'</div>

<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">I meet with a few friends once a month to sew for a few hours at night and this is the project we chose for this past month. After reviewing many tutorials we chose this one over at <a href="http://2littlehooligans.blogspot.com/2010/10/casserole-carrier-tutorial.html">2littlehooligans</a>. When we meet and agree on a project it is always interesting and fun to see how we each make it our own, so one of us chose to not quilt the layers just like in the photo, she finished her project first. The other 2 of us, myself included wanted to quilt, it took us longer for that step, Then when it came to the handles we each had our own style again, one stuck to the tutorial, and I made my own based on the knowledge I had from make straps for other projects, we also added a little handle closure thingy to help keep the handles together when carrying.</div>This project can be fast and it one for the gift pile, now I need to have an excuse to use it........<br />

<div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;">I am sure you have seen these doily runners popping up all over blog land and pinterest, well it was time I got one! I have a box of lace and other sewing treasures that was given to me and I thought I remembered a number of doilies in there so I thought I would check it out....well I not only had enough for me I had enough for my friend to make one and probably a few gifts to come.... well here is my rendition, I sorted them out according to size, color, and style. Then alternated for the layout, we probably fiddled with the layout for a few hours, then I decided to zig zag mine together, some others tied them but that was a little to tedious for me on this project, I was needing some instant gratification that day! So when you're shopping yard sales or antique stores and you see a pile of doilies...pick em up! (do you see my new Bernina in the back? thanks to my honey ;x )</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br />

Saw this pin on pinterest and knew I had the perfect pair of frumpy pants to try it on, they were going in the goodwill pile so if I ruined them I wouldn't care. So I tried them on inside out and started marking just like in <a href="http://cottonandcurls.blogspot.com.br/2011/02/busy-busy-day.html">this blog post</a>, then I pinned the fabric together and sewed a straight line just as instructed in the mini tutorial. It took me a few tries at the crotch and hips but I got it, I am a mother of 5 and have some teenagers (don't want to look like I squeezed into one of their pants!!! that's hilarious just to think about...I have unfortunately seen moms that look like this) so the supper tight look is not for me, but I think you will agree with me that this is a HUGE improvement! So examine your closet and I bet you will find some paints or skirts that are in need of an update. This does not take any major sewing skills but if you are a little timid you can brush up on some sewing basics and tailoring skills here on <a href="http://www.burdastyle.com/techniques">Burda</a>, they have great how to'sshellyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01749479087853622025noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3900738161884175561.post-85657185081701493532012-02-16T12:53:00.000-08:002012-02-16T13:05:09.770-08:00a couch makeover and a single girl block <div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br />

Well its been all year and I didn't make it so now that we are close to the time when you hang it on the wall I needed to get going! So here is the tutorial that we followed from </span><a href="http://sewmamasew.com/blog2/2009/07/elizabeths-fabric-focus-christmas-in-july-advent-calendar/"><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Sew Mama Sew</span></a><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> (when I say "we" I mean my </span><a href="http://katiewiebe.blogspot.com/search?q=advent"><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">friend</span></a><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> and I who also made them with me, between the two of us we made 7, we bought yard cuts and shared the fabric) Since my squares were already cut and matched up (pattern wise) which is the time consuming part, I got right to it. If you will notice the different styles of numbering that can be done....you choose what works best for you! The first one I embroidered with colored thread on white fabric, cut out squares and sewed them on by machine, the second I used the printable fabric paper which went faster, and for mine I just freehand embroidery on circles of felt and then stitched the circles on the squares randomly (which might be my favorite method...quick and cute)</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I followed this pattern close with thees exceptions:</span><br />
